HAMILTON CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT
WILSON MIDDLE SCHOOL

Mike was the SHP Project Manager for a phased building program including Wilson Middle School in 2009. Cindy was the Principal in Charge of Interiors. The existing Wilson Middle School was an attractive art deco building from the 1930s that had sentimental value to the community. However, it was a heavy bearing wall structure with room dimensions and programmatic spaces that did not align with 21st Century Learning concepts. Further, there was a private philanthropically funded addition to the building from the 1990s that was appropriately programmed for future use. The approach taken with the new programming and design kept the 1990s addition, focused on the art deco style of the original building, but made significant adjustments to the site utilization to address sustainable design orientation, daylighting, school security, and of course appropriately programmed spaces to align with the master plan goals. Significant community engagement meetings were held at every phase of the design process to assure a successful outcome and shared vision for a new Wilson Middle School.
